A few weeks ago Kaitlyn Ray told me she was working on a surprise for me but she couldn't tell me what it was. I've been anxiously waiting and today she showed up with a newspaper wrapped present. I ripped off the paper to find this ceramic YL box she made in art class. It's my favorite colors and has a bible verse on each side. She came in early and stayed after school to make it just perfect. I LOVE it.
Tonight the YL kids gathered for our last YL Club of the semester-- a Photo Scavenger Hunt around Fishers. We've had smaller Club numbers this semester so we thought we'd be fine on drivers, especially when almost all of our leaders came tonight. But then the kids started coming, and kept walking through the door, and piling out of vans, and kept rolling up. Suddenly we realized we might not have enough room for them all (which is a great problem to have).
We started piling into the leaders cars and just fit in. Every group had a list of 20 items to document and exactly one hour to get it all finished. Everything had to be posted on Instagram and tagged with @hseyounglife so we'd be able to see all of the pictures and Vine videos.
- Picture in front of where we had our first Campaigners (Abby/Ryan)
- Pose with an employee and a Blizzard from DQ
- Go hug one of your parents.
- Make a Y and an L in front of HSE
- Find a Port-a-Potty and pose by it
- Cannonball into Geist
- Pose in the living room of a high school staff member
- Find someone in a green hat and record yourself saying "Awesome green hat, man!" (even if it's a woman)
- Buy one grape from Kroger
- Ask for a cup from Noodles and Company and fill it with tire mulch from the playground at HTC
- Somehow obtain a leftover breadstick from a departing customer at Olive Garden at HTC.
- Pose with the most fascinating tourist brochure at the hotel at HTC.
- Take a picture with a Goodwill employee...after you donate something on your person. You must also bring back the donation receipt.
- Get a firefighter to sport a YL shirt and pose for a picture
- Crete a Vine video in front of a church singing Amazing Grace.
- Create a Vine video rap about how amazing camp is going to be this summer.
- Obtain sidewalk chalk and write an encouraging Bible verse in a random student parking spot.
- Squeegee the windshield and back window of someone getting their gas at a gas station.
- Pose with a stuffed animal and employee of Mike's Express Car Wash. You must all make the face of the stuffed animal.
- Instagram a picture of yourselves carrying out someone's groceries to their car.
Haleigh, Natty B, Maddy Wilson, Mariah and Saba were on my team and so much fun. We got all but two items on the list and ended with the grand finale of Nat cannonballing into Geist. Our car pulled back into the driveway with just two minutes to spare. The three teams that got back before time was up timed for first place. It was awesome hearing everyone's stories as they pulled back in and seeing the soaking wet kids that had jumped into the lake.
Ryan talked to us about how Christ tells us to seek and we will find, that this journey that we're on leads us to discover Him and what he has in store for us. He asked all of us what it is that we've been looking for and challenged us to think about what that means for us.
It has been quite the year with HSE Young Life from our very first Campaigners in Abby and Ryan's living room to our last Club tonight. We've got one more Campaigners lesson on Memorial Day next week before school is out for the summer. I'm so thankful for all the time we've shared, conversations we've been part of, the things we've learned, the times we've prayed together, the community that has been built and the relationships we've made. God is good, all the time.
